Average speed:
Average speed gives no information about speed variations during the journey. A runner who covers 100 m in 10 s has an average speed of 10 m/s, whether they ran steadily or accelerated then slowed down.
Instantaneous speed:
It is the limit of average speed as the time interval approaches zero. In practice, with FizziQ, it is approximated by calculating the speed over a very short interval (between two successive frames of a video).

- On a position-time graph, average speed is the slope of the chord connecting two points
- Instantaneous speed is the slope of the tangent to the curve at a point
The case of GPS:
The smartphone GPS calculates speed from position variations. It gives a quasi-instantaneous speed, but averaged over a few seconds to filter out noise.
